3. Tour Old Tunnel State Park!

If you’re not a fan of bats, this activity probably isn’t for you – as we’ll discuss in a moment.

But Old Tunnel State Park is one of the most unique attractions in Fredericksburg – so it’s earned a mention on our list! With a family-friendly, half-mile walking trail and a dedicated picnic area, this is a great choice for families with young children.

This park has been built around an abandoned railroad tunnel – hence the name. This tunnel now houses over 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats, and over 3000 cave myotis bats. From May-October, visitors can pay an admission fee to walk through the park after 5 P.M., and watch the bats emerge from the tunnel at night.

It’s truly a sight to behold – millions upon millions of bats pouring out of the tunnel, seeking their nightly prey. If you’re interested in learning more about the bats, child-friendly educational sessions are available Thursday-Sunday.

These fun programs are run by local park rangers, and provide you and your kids with educational information about the history of Old Tunnel State Park, the local wildlife, and the bats that live within the tunnel!

Just make sure to call (866) 978-2287 before you head over – when you call this number, the park staff will give you their latest emergence time information, so that you won’t miss the nightly bat-viewing!
